You used to be able to walk through the main square to enter lumphini. They put up the fences during Covid to create a queue to get in so everyone would have to do temperature checks. Four years later, the fences remain. Why?!

honestly i think they just never bothered to take them down. the city's pretty slow about that kind of thing once they find a setup that works for them. i've seen them use that fenced area for bike parking during big events too, not just the red cross fair

if u wanna skip the whole mess just go in through the gate on witthayu road near the embassy. it's usually empty and you're in the park in 30 seconds.

It is frustrating. I've heard from a few people who work nearby that part of the reason is the BMA uses it to control the flow of people during the Red Cross Fair, which takes over Lumphini for about ten days every December. That setup stays up all year because it's apparently cheaper to leave the barriers than to keep taking them down and putting them back up. If you want to avoid the mess, the side entrance on Sarasin Road near the British Embassy is usually wide open and gets you straight into the park without any hassle.

That plaza is technically called the Royal Plaza, named after the equestrian statue of King Rama VI. The fences went up for the same reason you mentioned, but they've stayed because the park management uses that space for controlled entry during major events and holidays. It's not just lingering COVID protocol, it's become a permanent crowd control setup they seem to like. I walk past it most mornings and it's frustrating because you can still see the old path that used to cut straight through to the park.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
