I guess it might be a bit less pricey to buy stuff over there than to have them imported in Europe.

Any good spots to recommend ? Thanks !

sampeng lane is the move but go deeper into the side sois off it, the main stretch is touristy now. the real wholesalers are tucked in the alleys, look for shops that sell only to restaurant staff, you'll see them hauling big bags of stuff.

for a wok specifically, skip the shiny ones and get the blue-black carbon steel ones that look rough, they're pre-seasoned from the factory and work way better. also grab a Thai cleaver (mito) while you're there, like 150 baht, it's the best knife for the price and you'll use it for everything.

if you're in the old town area, check out the hardware stores on Bamrung Muang road near the Giant Swing, they have decent quality stainless mixing bowls and strainers that are way cheaper than the kitchen shops. and for a granite mortar, go to the wet market near Klong Toey, not the tourist ones, the vendors use them daily so you'll find the heavy ones that actually grind well.

honestly skip the tourist markets for cookware, go to Yaowarat (Chinatown) around Sampeng Lane. that whole area is packed with kitchen supply shops, mostly wholesale but they sell single pieces too. you'll find proper carbon steel woks for like 200-400 baht, way better than anything you'd pay triple for back home.

for higher end stuff, check out the kitchen floor at Central Embassy or Siam Paragon, they have a good selection of Japanese knives and European brands, but that's not gonna be cheaper than importing. the real deal is the local stuff, cast iron pans from the morning markets or the ones at Or Tor Kor market, they're solid and dirt cheap.

if you want something specific like a mortar and pestle (krok), grab a granite one from any local market, the ones in tourist shops are overpriced and thinner. also look for the stainless steel steamers, they're everywhere in Chinatown and last forever.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
