yo the bean paste noodles are the real hidden gem here, the ones at the liusha avenue stalls are good but there's a lady on renmin road near the old cinema who does a version with extra lard and fried garlic that's next level, only 12 yuan and she's been there since the 90s. also if you're into spicy stuff the grilled squid at guanghua night market is solid but ask for the extra chili powder mix they keep under the counter, it's not on display but regulars know
honestly the guide nails it but i'd add that the beef hotpot at chaoji is even better if u go for lunch on a weekday, way less crowded and the broth tastes fresher. also if ur around the confucius temple area in the morning, theres a guy selling steamed rice rolls with egg and preserved veg from a cart near the north gate, only 6 yuan and he's there from 7 to 10am. one thing the guide doesnt mention is the fried tofu with chive dip at the guanghua night market, it's at the second stall from the jiefang road corner and costs like 8 yuan, super crispy on the outside
solid guide, covers most of the big spots. one thing i'd add is the morning scene at the small market behind puning no.1 middle school, it's not really touristy at all but the peanut soup with fried dough sticks there is killer, like 4 yuan for both. also for the braised goose, laojie is good but there's a takeout window on renmin road near the old theater that does the same quality for half the price, just no seating and they sell out by 6pm usually

It's a 15 yuan taxi to Liusha if you need shopping, but the peace at night makes it worth the short ride.
One thing the guide doesn't mention is that the Puning Museum on Guangming Road has a free exhibition on Chaozhou woodcarving that's better than the paid ones in Chaozhou city. It's only open 9am to 4pm and closed Mondays, but the third floor has this room full of old opera masks that most tourists walk right past.
seconding the wenming road food tip, but i'd add that the best time to hit that alley is actually around 6pm when the bao guy is just setting up and the line hasn't formed yet. also if you're staying near liusha avenue, check out the little dim sum place on the second floor of the building across from the international hotel, they do these shrimp dumplings with a hint of ginger that's hard to find elsewhere in town, around 25 yuan for a basket of eight
the guide's right about wanda plaza being family friendly but the real hidden gem is the morning market on huanshi north road around 7am. all the older locals go there for fresh rice rolls and this soy milk that's way better than what you'll get at hotels. also if you're into hiking, there's a trail behind puning park that leads up to a little temple nobody talks about, takes like 20 minutes and the view over the city is unreal at sunrise
