**🏛️ Founding and Early Days** Seoul's story begins in 18 BCE with the founding of Baekje, one of Korea's Three Kingdoms, which established its capital at Wiryeseong, near present-day southeastern Seoul. Visitors can explore the remnants of this era at the Mongchon Earthen Fortress in Olympic Park, where the ancient walls still stand amid modern sports facilities. The Baekje era left a legacy of early statecraft and cultural exchange that set the stage for centuries of urban development. **👑 Joseon Dynasty Capital** In 1394, the Joseon Dynasty moved its capital to Hanyang, today's Seoul, marking the start of over 500 years of royal rule. The dynasty's most iconic landmarks, Gyeongbokgung Palace and Changdeokgung Palace, were built during this period and remain must-see sites for history buffs. Gyeongbokgung, the main palace, offers free guided tours in English at 11:00 and 13:30 daily, while Changdeokgung's Secret Garden requires a separate ticket (KRW 8,000) and is best visited in autumn for its stunning foliage. **🛡️ War and Resilience** The Imjin War (1592-1598) devastated Seoul, with Japanese invasions burning palaces and leaving the city in ruins. The Joseon court's resilience is visible today at the restored Namdaemun Gate, which was rebuilt after a 2008 arson and now stands as a symbol of endurance. Visitors can also see the war's impact in the city's defensive walls, such as the Naksan section, which offers a scenic hike with views of old and new Seoul. **🏯 Joseon's Lasting Legacy** The Joseon Dynasty's Confucian values and urban planning shaped Seoul's layout, with the city centered around royal palaces and administrative buildings. Jongmyo Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is where kings performed ancestral rites; its solemn atmosphere contrasts with the bustling streets of nearby Jongno. The shrine's daily guided tours (10:00, 12:00, 14:00, 16:00) provide insight into Confucian rituals, and admission is only KRW 1,000. **🏭 Modernization and Growth** The late 19th and early 20th centuries brought rapid modernization, with Seoul opening to foreign trade and building its first railways and tram lines. The Japanese colonial period (1910-1945) left a mixed architectural legacy, including the former Japanese Government-General Building, which was demolished in 1995 but whose foundation is now part of the National Museum of Korea. Today, the Cheonggyecheon Stream, once covered by a highway, symbolizes Seoul's rebirth as a modern, eco-friendly city. **🔥 Korean War Aftermath** The Korean War (1950-1953) left Seoul in ruins, changing hands four times and reducing much of the city to rubble. The War Memorial of Korea, located in Yongsan, offers a sobering look at the conflict with exhibits on military history and a moving memorial hall. Visitors can also see the remains of the old Seoul Station, which was heavily damaged during the war and now serves as a cultural venue, a stark contrast to the sleek new KTX station next door. **🏙️ Contemporary Seoul** Since the 1960s, Seoul has transformed into a global metropolis, hosting the 1988 Olympics and the 2002 World Cup, which spurred massive infrastructure projects. The city's skyline, dominated by the Lotte World Tower (555 meters), reflects this rapid growth, while the historic Bukchon Hanok Village preserves traditional houses amid modern high-rises. For a panoramic view of old and new, head to N Seoul Tower on Namsan, where you can see palaces, skyscrapers, and the Han River in one sweep. **📜 Where to Learn More** To dive deeper into Seoul's history, the National Museum of Korea in Yongsan houses over 220,000 artifacts, including the famous Pensive Bodhisattva and a stunning collection of Goryeo celadon. The Seoul Museum of History in Jongno offers free admission and focuses on the city's evolution from prehistoric times to the present. Both museums have English signage and audio guides, making them accessible for international visitors.
