Is it okay to ask Germans for help?

Question

I moved to berlin last year, and I will be moving into a new apartment in the next few months.

I come from a country where people usually offer help in these situations, but I don't think this is so culturally common here.

Is it okay to ask some German colleagues for help with the moving?

It's absolutely fine to ask, but you need to make the ask concrete. Germans are usually happy to help if you're specific about what you need, like "I need someone to help carry a couch up three flights of stairs on Saturday" rather than a vague "could you lend a hand sometime?" Also, offering something in return goes a long way, even if it's just pizza and beer afterwards. That's not expected, but it makes the exchange feel fair and is appreciated.

One thing to watch out for is the timeline. People here plan ahead, so ask at least two to three weeks in advance, not the week before. If your colleagues are from Berlin, they'll be direct with you if they can't do it, so don't take a "no" as rudeness. And if you need a van, many people will just tell you to rent a Transporter from a place like Sixt or Robben & Wientjes, which is cheap for a day, rather than offering their own car.

yeah totally fine to ask, but like don't expect the whole crew to show up. better to ask one or two people you're close with, not the whole office. also be ready for them to say no without a big apology, that's just how it goes here. honestly a lot of people will tell u to just book a moving service, it's pretty normal to pay for that instead of bothering friends.

Just be upfront and don't overthink it. Germans appreciate a direct question with a clear date, so "on the 15th I need help with the fridge" beats a long polite buildup.

Also, don't be surprised if they suggest you hire someone instead. Renting a van and paying
