Ayutthaya's Hidden Canals?

Question

So, I wandered down Si Ayutthaya Road, totally lost in the maze of motorbikes and tuk-tuks. The main streets were buzzing, but I stumbled on these tiny, almost secret, alleyways that opened onto little canals. They were surprisingly peaceful, families washing clothes, kids playing, the air thick with the smell of jasmine and something frying... delicious. I'm dying to know, are there boat tours or even just small boat rentals available on those quieter waterways? I'd love to explore them properly.

yeah those little khlongs are a different world. if you want to explore them by water, skip the tourist boats and head to khlong moeng at the end of soi 17 off si ayutthaya road, there's a family there that rents out paddleboats for like 80 baht an hour, no engine, just you and the lotus pads. they don't advertise, you just walk down to the water and someone's kid will wave you over. it's worth timing it for late afternoon when the light goes golden and the herons start hunting

you could try khlong thammarak near wat phutthai sawan in the late afternoon, there's this old guy with a wooden boat who does sunset trips just for the vibe, not really a tour, he just paddles around and points out monitor lizards and lotus flowers, 150 baht if he likes you

torben · Answer

not really for rentals tbh, but you can join a longtail from the main river that dips into khlong tho for a bit. they'll cut the engine and let it drift so you get that quiet vibe, just less of the hidden alley part. if you want the real secret canals, rent a bike and follow the soi off u-thong road near wat phanan choeng, there's a tiny community pier where locals launch their own boats but it's not a tourist thing

That stretch of canal near Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon has a few unofficial spots where monks will let you borrow their small rowboats if you catch them after morning alms, around 8am. It's not advertised anywhere and you'll need to be respectful about it, but they're usually happy to share the water with someone who's genuinely curious. The canals back there connect to a lotus-filled basin that most tourists never see because the main temple entrance faces the other direction. Just don't take photos of the monks or their living quarters and you'll be fine.

those little khlongs are best seen by foot tbh, the bike rental idea is solid but if you want to actually be on the water without hassle, khlong thuam up near wat na phra men has a couple of guys who rent out these flat-bottomed bamboo rafts, not boats exactly, more like floating platforms with a pole to push yourself along. 50 baht for 30 minutes, you drift past sleeping cats and old wooden stilt houses where aunties will wave and sometimes offer you slices of mango if you look harmless. the entrance is hidden behind a noodle shop that only has a sign in thai, just follow the smell of fish sauce and look for a red cooler full of ice tea out front
