Do you think there are steps that could be taken that would actually help the issue? It seems like the public transit system is already extensive and reliable, and there are new massive highways being built all the time. What do you think could be done that could alleviate the traffic congestion?

Honestly the biggest thing nobody talks about is school runs. Around 6:45 to 7:30am half the cars on Sukhumvit or Phetchaburi are parents doing the drop off, and it clears up by 8:15 like clockwork. If more schools ran staggered start times or actually used their own buses instead of letting every kid arrive by private car, that alone would thin out rush hour a lot. Cheaper than building another expressway too.

Flooding is the part that never gets mentioned in these threads. Every time there's a decent downpour, half the lanes on roads like Rama IV or Lat Phrao flood and you lose an entire lane for hours, which backs everything up far beyond the rain itself. Fixing drainage and keeping the khlongs clear would do more for rush hour than another elevated highway, and it's the kind of thing that pays off year round.

The BTS and MRT are great but they don't connect well enough for a lot of trips. If you live in Bang Kae and work in Lat Phrao, you're looking at two or three transfers plus a motosai ride on each end, so people just drive instead. Better feeder bus networks into the stations would probably do more than any new expressway.

Also the sois are the real problem. Every main road has cars parked along both sides turning a two lane street into one, and nobody enforces it. Sorting out parking on Thong Lor or Sukhumvit soi side streets would free up a surprising amount of capacity.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
