Help? Exchange Cambodian Riel (KHR) to Thai Baht (THB) in early April 2024

For those that would visit Cambodia for whatever reason. I have 231,500 KHR (~ $57 USD) which my parents forgot to exchange way back when. I'll be heading to Bangkok in April 2024 with no stop in Cambodia.

If you're able to buy/exchange my KHR for THB, that would be great. Thanks.

Even the money changers in the Pratunam area or along Sukhumvit won't touch riel with a 10-foot pole, they barely handle dong or kyat unless you're close to the border. Your best bet is to find a Cambodia-focused travel group on Facebook or a forum like ThaiVisa and see if anyone's heading back from Siem Reap. You could also try the Cambodia embassy on Sathon Tai, but they're not a currency exchange counter. At 231,500 KHR you're looking at roughly 2,000 baht, which is not nothing, but most banks here will charge a fee that eats into it if they even accept the notes.

honestly your best move might be just finding a traveler at one of the khao san road hostels who's heading to cambodia next. there's always someone leaving for siem reap or phnom penh and they'd probably take the riel at a fair rate rather than deal with atm fees. otherwise the superrich branches near centralworld won't touch it, i checked last year with some leftover riel. worst case you can try the currency exchange at the basement of big c rachadamri, they sometimes take odd notes but the rate will be brutal

The Cambodia embassy on Sathon Tai has a small consular section but no exchange counter, though some of the staff there have helped travelers swap leftover riel informally if you catch them on a slow day. You could also try the Cambodian-owned grocery shops near the embassy on Sathon Soi 1, they sometimes take riel for goods or might know someone heading back. At 2,000 baht worth it's worth a 20 baht taxi ride from Chong Nonsi BTS to ask around.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
