Advice on tailors for a budget suit in Bangkok?

I am a Bangkok native so timeframe does not really matter. Made to measure or bespoke, I have a slim fit frame which requires only minor alterations anyway. I am not too experienced in fashion so I'd rather not order from Suit Supply or other, well known, online MTM brands.

I heard good things about

Out of my price range

Does anyone have any experience with president tailors or jesse and son? I would love to hear your thoughts.

yeah jesse and son is fine for the price but their house style runs a bit boxy imo. if you're slim you gotta be really specific about the waist suppression or they'll just give you a standard cut. i'd ask for a shorter jacket length too since they default to covering your whole ass which looks weird on a lean frame

president tailors has been around forever but their patterns haven't really evolved since the 90s. the wool they stock is decent for the price point but the construction quality is hit or miss depending on which cutter you get. ask for mr somchai if you go there, he actually listens

honestly for your budget and timeframe i'd check out pinky tailors on sukhumvit soi 8 instead. they do a lot of work for airline crew so theyre used to slim cuts and the base 100% wool starts around 6k baht. just bring a reference photo of the fit you want or they'll default to their own thing

the exchange rate tip from the other reply is solid btw - at current rates 500 usd is like 17k baht which gets you a much better fabric than what they quote in dollars. ask for vitale barberis canonico if they have it, mills in italy and wears cooler than english wools in bangkok's humidity

since you're a local and have time on your side, i'd actually recommend taking a different route. hit up the fabric district around pahurat and bobae markets on a weekday morning. you can find good 100% wool bolts for 300-500 baht per meter if you know what to look for. then take that fabric to a small alteration shop in siam square or the old bang rak area - there's a guy named lung sit on soi charoen krung 30 who does full suits for 4k baht labor. he's been cutting since the 70s and doesn't speak much english which is why tourists miss him

the trick is getting the cloth first because these tailors mark up fabric 3-4x what it actually costs. i've done this twice now and ended up with super 130s wool for about 9k baht total which is way under your budget. just make sure you wash the fabric before bringing it in - most shops won't tell you but the cheap bolts sometimes shrink weird in bangkok's humidity

if you're a bangkok native you prob know the tourist markup already but just a heads up - most of these sukhumvit tailors quote foreigners higher and then "negotiate" down. speak thai from the start and you'll get a better price without the song and dance

president tailors is fine but their fabric selection is mostly entry level stuff, you wont find anything above super 120s in your range. jesse and son i've heard mixed things about consistency - one friend got a solid suit, another had the lining bunch up after a few wears

honestly for 500 usd you could check out the tailors in the old siam area near bang rak. there's a few smaller shops tucked along charoen krung that do decent mtm work for 8-12k baht. they don't have the fancy showrooms but the cutters have been doing this for decades and they actually understand slim fits without you having to explain it

one thing that nobody mentioned - bring your own fabric. you can get good 100% wool at pahurat market for way less than what these shops charge. then just pay for labor which should be around 3-5k baht for a two piece. the shops might grumble but they'll do it if you're firm

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
