If you're gone for weeks at a time from your condo / home, what indoor humidity percentages should you be concerned with, in terms of mold growth, or other damaging and harmful effects?

I'm aware most of you may not measure this, but I have a digital thermometer in my condo that I can check remotely, and it's saying my humidity is in the 72% range right now. I'm just hearing of how hot and humid it's gotten recently from friends, and getting little worried about my condo. The temperature is like 85F deg / 30C deg. 😬

Watch the closet and kitchen cabinets before anything else. At 72% your clothes and any rice or dried goods are going to take in moisture fast, and you'll come back to musty shirts and weevils in the pantry. I've seen it happen to a friend's place near Asok after a three week trip, the smell took weeks to get out of the wardrobe even after washing everything.

A practical move that costs almost nothing is to buy a few of those reusable silica gel canisters from HomePro and hang them inside the closets, but the real fix is to leave your bathroom exhaust fan running. Most condos here have that fan wired to the light switch, but if yours has a separate switch, leave it on the whole time. It pulls air out constantly and drops the whole unit by a few percent, which at your level is the difference between trouble and manageable.

Also check the seals on your balcony door before you leave, at 30C and that humidity the rubber gaskets can warp and let warm air seep in. A roll of weather stripping from Mr. DIY is like 150 baht and takes five minutes to apply. That plus the exhaust fan should keep you under 65% for a few weeks, anything beyond a month and you really do need a proper dehumidifier.

yeah 72% at 30C is rough, that's basically a free sauna for mold spores. but honestly the thing most people sleep on is your mattress and pillows, those soak up humidity like crazy and you'll come back to a bed that smells like a wet dog no matter how clean it was. silicon bags in the wardrobe help a little but they're useless for the big picture.

what i'd do is check if your condo has a central ventilation shaft or a bathroom exhaust that actually pulls air, some of these newer buildings near ekkamai have decent airflow that you can leave on a low setting. even a cheap wall fan on a timer pointed at the dampest corner like under the sink or near the balcony door will keep air moving and stop that stagnant pocket effect. the AC cycling trick works but only if your unit's drain line is clear, mine clogged once and it flooded the hallway, that's a 2000 baht cleaning fee i won't forget.

also don't ignore the glass, at that humidity you'll get condensation on the inside of your windows and that drips down to the frames, which is where the black gunk starts. wipe them down before you leave and maybe crack the balcony door a tiny bit if you can, just a cm, to let some of that moisture out. if you're really gone for over a month, honestly just get a dehumidifier with a hose to the bathroom drain, it pays for itself compared

72% is definitely in the danger zone for mold if you're gone that long, especially at 30C. anything above 60% for sustained periods is asking for trouble, and 72% is basically a petri dish for spores on any fabric or drywall. i'd grab a dehumidifier with a built-in hygrometer and set it to 55%, but the catch is you need a floor drain or a condensate pump setup, otherwise the tank fills up in a day and it shuts off. most condos here have a balcony or a bathroom drain you can route it to, that's what i did in my place near thong lo.

if you can't do the plumbing, look into those silica gel buckets from homepro, but honestly they're useless for a whole unit. another option is just running your AC in dry mode remotely, but that only works if you have a smart unit and it'll spike your electric bill, probably around 1500-2000 baht extra a month. i'd prioritize the dehumidifier, mold remediation here costs way more than the electricity.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
