I was back in Bangkok last winter for 3 months and it was great to be back again after almost 10 years, Bangkok is the best city in the world, one of the best at least.

One thing that made me sad however, was that the nightlife that I remember was gone.

The small girlie bars on the street where gone. That was the saddest probably. Where else in the world could you sit down, have fun and flirt, while drinking a bear on the street, in total safety? People never realize what they have until it's gone.

Then there was Insanity and Climax, both closed. Soi 11 no longer has Cheap Charlies, Bed or Qbar, instead the cheapest and saddest beer bars of Pattaya.

Yeah, I'm talking about the naughty nightlife of Bangkok mostly. That crazy, fun nightlife, if you went home alone or with someone, didn't matter.

Where is it? Why is it shut down?

I have a theory: It's the camera phones. It's all the fucking youtubers. It's being filmed, put on blast, no longer can you be drunk out of your mind and have fun. You'll end up on someones youtube.

We're living in a voyeur time.

The camera phone theory holds some weight but I think the real killer was the 2016-2017 zoning crackdowns. The BMA got serious about enforcing the Entertainment Act that technically bans bars from operating within 100 meters of schools and temples, which covers huge chunks of Sukhumvit. Soi 33 lost maybe 15 bars overnight when they started measuring distances with GPS.

The messy street energy you're looking for has shifted to the Saphan Khwai area if you know where to walk. There's a stretch of soi 8 off Pradiphat Road where the old-school beer gardens operate more like the 2000s Sukhumvit scene, just with fewer tourists and more local office workers. The girls are older, the drinks are 60 baht, and nobody's filming because the Thai crowd would shut that down fast.

Camera phones definitely changed the vibe, but I think the bigger shift was the 2014 coup and the junta's push to clean up the city for tourism board optics. They cracked down hard on the old Soi Cowboy and Nana street stalls around 2015, and a lot of those little bars just never got their licenses back.

If you want that messy street energy now, head to the Ratchada area around Huai Khwang. It's not the same as the old Sukhumvit scene but there's a raw, unpolished feel with the late-night food stalls and beer joints that still let things get a bit loose after midnight. The crowd is mostly locals and expats who've been here long enough to know where to look.

you're not wrong about the phone thing but that's not the whole story. a lot of the old spots on soi cowboy and nana got priced out or shut down by the military government's "clean up" campaigns around 2015-2017. the real action now is in thonglor and ekkamai but it's way more upscale and bottle-service vibes, not the same messy street fun. if you want that old energy you gotta go to RCA or even out to the khaosan area where the backpackers keep things loose.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
