I hear from others that Bangkok has either legitimate traditional massage spots, or those spots with girls lined outside that wouldn't be very happy to offer just a standard, relaxing massages with no "specials". That the latter means a pretty poor massage experience, and a need to negotiate NOT to get such specials. For this reason, I've only been going to traditional massage spots and avoiding any spots that had the slightest bit suspiciously-looking girls in front.

I lived in Chiang Mai before, and the city had a number of places that hired exclusively attractive girls, you could pick your masseuse, but the businesses had strict rules that you are getting exactly what you picked upfront on the menu, with nobody ever attempting to upsell sex (and it certainly wasn't on the menu). Those businesses seemed to genuinely care about their reputation and quality of service, and girls were well-trained in each type of massage offered.

In most cases that meant paying a few hundred to get genuinely pampered for an hour and get a much slower-paced massage. I really liked the more relaxing and "sensual" experience than the more mechanical massages that the traditional oil massage spots typically perform. It was also comfortable to know that there's going to be no awkwardness or further negotiations.

Does Bangkok have spots like that too? How can one find them? I want to avoid negotiating at potentially "sketchy" places hiring working girls who may not exactly specialize in legitimate massages. Does anyone know any spots that could fit the bill?

yeah those chiang mai style places exist here but they're not as common. try the ones near phrom phong or sukhumvit 39 area - there's a few that are clearly legit with proper signage and trained staff. look for places that have a printed menu with specific time options like 60/90/120 min and mention thai massage or aromatherapy specifically, not just "oil massage"

the key difference is the vibe at the entrance. if the girls are sitting on stools scrolling phones and the place has a dark tinted glass door, skip it. if they're wearing matching uniforms and the front is well lit with a proper reception desk, you're probably fine. one spot i know is khun thai massage on sukhumvit 39, mixed genders working there and very professional about keeping it above board

honestly just look for places that have their price list displayed on a board outside with actual time increments like 60/90/120 min. if they list "oil massage 500 baht 60 min" with no asterisks or vague categories you're good. the ones with girls sitting outside almost never post prices at all, or just say "massage" with no specifics which is a red flag

i found a spot called sabai massage on sukhumvit 49 that fits what you're after. they hire younger girls who are actually trained and the atmosphere is more spa-like with dim lighting and music. costs about 700 for 90 min which is fair for the quality. another one is thonglor massage on soi 55, the girls there are friendly and professional never tried to push anything extra on me

one trick i use is going during daytime hours like 10am-3pm. the sketchy places tend to have fewer girls sitting around then and the legit ones are open and busy with actual customers. also check if they offer foot massage or thai massage on their menu - places that focus on those are usually not in the other business

honestly you're overthinking this a bit. the girls lined up outside are just a visual tell for the "other" industry, not a guarantee of bad massage. but if you want that chiang mai vibe without the awkwardness, try arnda massage on sukhumvit 49. they hire young, attractive women who actually know their stuff, and the menu is printed clear with no hidden extras. i've been a few times and never once had anyone hint at anything else, it's just a solid massage with good pressure and a relaxed atmosphere

another spot is let's relax, they have branches all over but the one on thong lo is quieter. prices are a bit higher, around 900-1000 for 60 minutes, but the girls are trained and the whole place is designed for comfort not confusion. no one's gonna try to upsell you because the owners would fire them. just book ahead or walk in during off hours, you'll be fine

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
