yeah jan 1st is gonna be a mess on the main arteries coming into bangkok. i'd add that the suvarnabhumi airport link and other public transport will be packed too since a lot of people fly back that day. if you can avoid driving between like 2pm and 8pm on the outer ring roads, do it. for getting around central bangkok on the 1st, the bts and mrt are actually pretty chill since half the city is still hungover or not back yet, so that's your best bet

yeah jan 1st will probably be lighter than jan 2nd tbh. most people actually travel back on dec 31st or jan 1st morning so by afternoon the main highways like phahonyothin and rama 2 tend to ease up. jan 2nd is when everyone actually has to be at work by 8am so that's when you'll see the real gridlock around victory monument and siam. if you're driving anywhere on jan 1st just avoid between 10am-2pm when the last wave of people head back

honestly jan 1st in bangkok is kind of a weird day traffic-wise. most people who went upcountry for the holidays will be driving back on the 1st, so the highways heading into the city like pahonyothin and bangna-trad will be a nightmare especially in the afternoon and evening. but inside the city itself, like sukhumvit or silom, it'll prob be pretty quiet until late afternoon since a lot of shops and offices are still closed.

jan 2nd when schools and offices actually open is when the inner city gets truly backed up again, so prepare for both days to suck in different ways. if you're driving in from outside, leave early morning like before 6am or just accept you'll be sitting in traffic for hours.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
