Why The Davis?

Why do people get their pictures taken professionally outside The Davis, Sukhumvit 24? I see people there at all hours, sometimes I have even seen newly married come here to get their picture taken. I see people there at all hours, sometimes I have even seen newly married come here to get their picture taken. I tried hard, but couldn't understand what's special about it. The Thais in my office don't know either.

it's the facade honestly. that lobby entrance with the curved driveway and the old school street lamps has this very specific european colonial vibe that reads as "classy" in photos without being too flashy. plus the lighting there in the late afternoon is golden hour perfection for portraits. most people don't realize it's actually a boutique hotel and not just a photo spot, but the management has gotten used to it and doesn't chase anyone off as long as you're not blocking the entrance

the davis has that specific mid-century modern thing going on that a lot of people don't notice, the curved driveway and those angled pillars were pretty forward-thinking for bangkok in the 60s. it's not really european colonial like some people say, more of that golden age of thai architecture when we were blending western modernism with local materials. if you want a similar vibe without the crowds, try the lobby of the sheraton grande on sukhumvit asok, same era but less people lining up for photos

the davis has that specific 1970s bangkok boutique hotel charm that most newer places lack. the driveway curve and those vintage lamps create a forced perspective that makes anyone look like they're at some grand estate. also worth noting that the management there has historically been pretty chill about letting photographers use the space which is rare for a hotel in that area. most sukhumvit spots will shoo you away within minutes

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
