Anyone getting weird calls to thai whatsapp number from what seems to be African (Malawi) area code?

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

yeah i get these on my ais number too, +265 and +234 mostly. they usually hang up after one ring hoping u call back so they can charge u premium rates. just block & report as spam in ur phone settings, truecaller helps a bit but its not perfect

The +265 ones are usually Wangiri style, they ring once and disconnect so the callback hits a premium number. What's changed lately is they're spoofing Thai mobile prefixes, so it looks like a local 06 or 08 number until you check the full string. I've had better luck just setting my AIS to reject unknown international calls entirely, though it means I miss the occasional real call from abroad.

WhatsApp itself is the weak spot here, not the SIM. If ur number is tied to your WhatsApp profile those Malawi numbers can hit you over data even when your carrier blocks international calls, so the AIS reject trick won't fully stop it. Go into WhatsApp settings, privacy, and set groups and calls to "my contacts" only. Also check linked devices, if there's a session you don't recognize kill it and turn on two step verification, cos that's how a lot of these lists get sold around. I still get maybe one a month now instead of the daily 3am nonsense.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
