What is your favorite man-bag to carry when out and about? I've been using a backpack but want something more streamline. So far I've looked at Tumi, Timbuk2, and Etacha (details in text of post)

Generally want to carry a phone, extra battery pack, sometimes my large tablet, inhaler, earbud case, and a few other things.

I happened to see a guy carrying a Tumi and it was a very nice bag but those are very expensive (12k-15k baht) and more than I want to spend.

Timbuk2 is an option but still a tad on the expensive side (USA prices for a USA designed bag) and they are a bit too Techbro and common for my taste.

I walked around in Central (Ladproa) and also saw a brand I hadn't seen before -- Etacha. It might do the trick. Made from waterproof material (similar to that used in waterproof gear bags for boating or mountain climbing). Looked rather rugged and well made.

I also walked around the Jatujak weekend market and didn't see anything special.

Anybody have a favorite they'd recommend?

honestly for that kind of carrying stuff daily in bangkok heat, i'd skip the big brands and check out the local bag shops at platinum fashion mall or even the little stalls at siam square soi 2. there's a bunch of no-name brands using that same waterproof sailcloth material for like 800-1500 baht and they hold up fine to the humidity and rain. the etacha ones look solid but you're paying extra for the name, the construction is basically identical to what you'd find at those stalls for a third of the price

check out the local japanese surplus shops around fortune town or the mbmk branch near asok. they have these small messenger bags from companies like mont-bell or seiko that are super lightweight and packable, usually under 2000 baht. i use one from mont-bell i got at a shop on sukhumvit soi 24, it's been my daily for two years and barely shows wear even with the tablet and battery pack. the waterproof coating isn't as heavy as etacha but it's fine for sudden rain if you're near a bts stop

another option is to hit up the outdoor shops near sanam pao on phahonyothin road, there's a few that carry random military surplus and hiking bags. they have these small sling packs made from the same waterproof cordura stuff, usually around 500-900 baht. not the prettiest but they're built for abuse and have good organization inside for an inhaler and cables.

for something a bit more everyday, i'd look at the muji store in central world. their nylon crossbody bags are simple, no branding, and run about 800-1200 baht. not waterproof but they hold up fine in light rain if u keep the tablet inside a dry bag. fits everything u listed except maybe a huge tablet

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
