those liter bottles are hit or miss tbh, some places water them down a lot. the real deal is the powder mixed with sour orange juice, that's the classic thai way to get the sedative effects without the nausea. there's a spot on khao san road that sells pre-mixed cups for like 40 baht, tastes like crap but gives you that warm fuzzy buzz for a couple hours. just start with half a cup, the strength varies wildly between vendors and you don't want to be that guy puking in a club bathroom

there's a guy on sukhumvit 49 near the big c who sells fresh powder for 100 baht a bag and he'll show you how to do it right. a level teaspoon in a small bottle of lime juice will give you that warm fuzzy feeling for a few hours without the nausea risk. start with half that though, some of his batches are strong enough to make you dizzy if you're not used to it

the cloud 9 thing is possible but it's not like alcohol or weed where you're zoning out. it's more like a clean, focused buzz with a body high. good for dancing or having conversations, not for staring at the ceiling

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
