But wandering down Si Ayutthaya Road, I noticed these tiny, almost hidden alleyways branching off. They looked intriguing, full of character, but I was hesitant to venture in alone. Are these alleyways safe to explore at night, or should I stick to the main roads? I'm dying to know what secrets they hold!

The alleyways off Si Ayutthaya Road are where the old Muslim community has been for generations, and you can still see the original teak houses with their carved window shutters if you look up. Night exploration is not a good idea because those lanes have inconsistent lighting and the soi dogs claim their territory after dusk. But around 4pm, you'll find families sitting on their porches and kids playing badminton in the street, and the old men at the corner shop will nod at you if you walk by with a smile.

yeah those alleyways are totally fine during the day, just watch your step cause the pavement is uneven as hell in some spots. one of them leads to a little canal where old wooden longtail boats are parked, feels like stepping back 50 years or something. night is sketchy mostly cause the soi dogs own the place and they're not mean but they will follow you barking and thats annoying more than scary. go around 3pm when the light filters through the trees and you'll see why locals love those lanes

i'd skip the alleyways at night honestly, the soi dogs are the main issue and they get bold after dark. during the day though, one of those lanes off si ayutthaya road leads to a community temple with a giant reclining buddha that's completely forgotten by tourists, just monks sweeping leaves around it. the roti sai mai cart the other person mentioned is legit, but the real find is the old wooden house next to it that sells homemade coconut ice cream for like 20 baht. just go late afternoon when the light hits the shophouses nice and the dogs are napping in the shade

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
