But I noticed something weird, a little hidden alcove near the pool, all overgrown with jasmine. It looked like something was hidden there, maybe an old access point or something. Anyone know the story behind that overgrown spot? Is it just overgrown, or is there actually something there? I'm dying to know!

i've heard from a boat driver on the river that the old shophouses along that stretch used to have hidden tunnels to the water, for smuggling goods during the war. sivalai's land might've absorbed one of those access points when they built the hotel. worth asking the oldest staff member you can find, they usually know the real stories

I'd bet on the old drainage grate theory honestly. One of the maintenance guys once told me they had to reroute some pipes a few years back and the jasmine was the quick fix to hide the patch job. The smell is the best part though.

all those stories are cool but the real answer is simpler, my neighbor's a retired historian who wrote a book on riverside bangkok. he said that exact spot was a public landing for the old khlong that got filled in when they built charoen krung road. the jasmine was planted by the original family who owned the land, they used to tie their long-tail boats there. you can still see the step stones if you push the vines back near the wall, but the hotel staff usually don't let people mess with it

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
