Is it sterile and impersonal, or is there a surprising level of comfort and human connection amidst all the high-tech stuff? Seriously curious because I'm a bit nervous about the whole thing. I'm hoping for less "cold hospital" and more "five-star hotel meets medical marvel"

Bumrungrad is seriously upscale. Think less sterile hospital, more high-end resort. They really go the extra mile on comfort, the rooms are spacious and well-appointed, the staff are incredibly attentive (seriously, they anticipate your needs before you even know you have them), and the whole place is surprisingly calming considering what it is. It's not cheap, obviously, but the level of care and the overall experience is miles above anything I've encountered elsewhere. You'll be fine. Don't sweat it.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
