The place was buzzing, locals chatting away, the air thick with the smell of lemongrass and something incredible I couldn't quite place. I ordered the Pad See Ew, and it was honestly life-changing. Seriously. But here's the thing... the menu was almost entirely in Thai. I managed okay with pointing and smiling, but I'm dying to know what all those other amazing-smelling dishes actually were. What are some must-try dishes at Thuyen that aren't on the English menu?

skip the apps and just go to thuyen on a weekday around 6pm when the owner's wife is at the front. she speaks enough english to walk you through the specials board, which is always in thai only. last time she pointed me to the hoy tod, a crispy mussel omelette that's not on any menu at all. it's this massive disc of egg and starch with fresh mussels and bean sprouts, served with sweet chili sauce. they only make maybe 10 portions a night and it sells out fast

The dish you're smelling is probably the pad kra pao, the holy basil stir-fry. Thuyen does a version with crispy pork belly that's incredible, and it's usually a safe bet if you just point at whatever the cook is sizzling. Also look for the gaeng som, a sour and spicy orange curry that's totally different from the usual massaman or green curry. It's a southern Thai specialty and they make it well there, with chunks of snakehead fish and long beans.

honestly the gaeng som the other person mentioned is legit but if you want something totally different try the yum pla duk foo. it's crispy shredded catfish with a green mango salad, super tangy and crunchy. they don't have it on any english menu anywhere i've seen. also look for the khao kluk kapi, it's a shrimp paste fried rice with sweet pork and mango. that one's usually listed under the rice section but it looks like nothing you'd expect

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
