I've heard whispers... legends, even, about its long-term guests. Apparently, some folks just...never leave. Is it just a rumour spread by jealous hostel owners? Or is there actually some kinda weird energy there? I'm hoping for a great stay, but seriously, what's the deal with all the stories? I'm packing extra batteries for my phone, just in case.

yeah the overstay stories are basically bangkok folklore at this point, every soi has a hotel with some urban legend attached to it. the actual vibe there is more like a hostel for adults, lots of remote workers and people between apartments. if you want something actually unsettling check out the old imperial hotel down on thong lor, that place has been abandoned for years and locals swear they see lights on at night. but for real, pack earplugs not batteries, the overstay's thin walls are the only curse you'll encounter

ngl the Overstay is actually pretty solid for the price, I know a couple people who've stayed there for like a month while apartment hunting around Sukhumvit. The stories are mostly just exagerrated gossip from the hostel crowd across the street, they're salty cause the Overstay has a rooftop bar with actual views. If you want proper street food hit up the soi 11 night market after dark, the lady with the green cart does killer som tam for like 60 baht.

You're overthinking the name, it's just a bit of branding that stuck. The Overstay is actually where a lot of expats crash for a few weeks when their lease doesn't line up, I've had two friends cycle through there between apartments. The only energy you'll feel is the mild anxiety of figuring out a BTS pass, which is the same everywhere in Bangkok. If you want a story to tell, walk down to the river taxi pier at Saphan Taksin around sunset, the vendors there sell grilled squid that's better than anything you'll get in a restaurant.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
