Yayoi's Secret?

But… So I finally went to Yayoi, that amazing Japanese restaurant everyone raves about in the Sukhumvit area of @Bangkok. The ramen was incredible, seriously some of the best I've had outside of Japan. But here's the thing... they have this one dish, a special tempura udon, that's only on the menu sometimes. I've heard whispers about it, people saying it's a legendary hidden menu item. Anyone know the secret to getting it? Is it a certain time of day? Do you have to say a magic word? I'm determined to unlock this culinary mystery!

Skip the branches everyone's mentioned and head to the one tucked inside the EmQuartier food hall, it's less chaotic than the street spots. The tempura udon there shows up when the head cook's feeling creative, usually late afternoon after the lunch crowd clears, and he'll often slide it in if you order the cold soba first as a warm-up. Also, the secret's less about timing and more about asking for the "kakiage version" specifically, that's what gets the kitchen's attention since it's not on any printed menu anywhere. If you catch him on a slow day, he'll even fry up some maitake mushrooms to toss in, which I've never gotten at the Sukhumvit branches.

Funny you mention it, I actually asked the owner about this once. He said the tempura udon is tied to the fishmonger he uses, a guy who only comes by on certain days depending on the monsoon season. When the catch is good, he makes a big batch for the staff and leaves a few bowls for whoever's there, no announcement, no menu. The Phrom Phong branch is where I've had the best luck, but it's less about the day and more about whether the owner's in a good mood after his morning coffee. He's got a little ritual where he sips it at the counter before the lunch rush, and if you catch him mid-sip, he'll nod at the kitchen and you're in. It's not a secret, it's just his rhythm, and once you see it, you'll spot it every time.

honestly forget the weekday thing, i've had it on a saturday night once but it was like 9pm and they were basically closing. might be a stock thing, they run out of the good noodles and just make it when they feel like it. just ask the older waiter, the one with the glasses, he'll tell you straight if it's happening. that tempura udon is worth the gamble tbh, the broth is way deeper than the regular one.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Their som tam is prob the most authentic I've found in the city, and the grilled chicken is always on point. Anyone else go here?

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
