A… I'm heading to Bansomdejchaopraya Rajabhat University next week for a conference. Heard the food stalls around the university are amazing, but navigating Thai food as a foreigner is always a gamble. Any tips on must-try dishes or stalls near the campus that won't leave me with a stomach ache? I'm really hoping to find something authentic and delicious, but not too spicy for a newbie. Maybe some street food recommendations too?

fwiw the night market on soi 15 is where i'd send you, opens around 5pm and has a guy who does grilled fish (pla pao) stuffed with lemongrass and galangal, super mild and the skin comes off easy. his wife runs a stall next door with mango sticky rice that's properly sweet, not the watered down tourist version. for lunch just hit the canteen inside the uni itself, the khao pad (fried rice) station lets you pick your protein and they barely use any chili unless you ask for prik nam pla. one heads up though, the water at the drink stalls is fine but stick to bottled if you're worried about your stomach adjusting

For a conference lunch that won't mess with your stomach, the halal food shop on Soi 15 does a fantastic massaman curry over rice. It's creamy from the coconut milk and mild, with potatoes and chicken, about 50 baht. The guy running it speaks enough English to help you order, and they have a cooler with cold bottled water right next to the counter. Just avoid the green curry at the same shop, that one has a real kick.

youll be fine around bansomdej honestly, the area is pretty used to students from all over so theyre not gonna crank the heat up on you unless you ask. for a proper intro to thai food without the gamble, hit the muslim food stalls near the intersection of charan sanitwong soi 13, they do a mean biryani (khao mok gai) thats fragrant and super mild, comes with a cucumber salad on the side that cuts through the richness

if you want something handheld and safe, the grilled squid (pla muek yang) from the cart on soi 17 is brushed with a sweet soy glaze, no chili involved. the lady there will give u a small plastic bag of sweet chili dip on the side but just skip it if youre nervous, the squid itself is perfect on its own. for dessert, the coconut ice cream stall on soi 11 has a vendor who scoops it into a small cup with sticky rice and peanuts, its like 20 baht and the coconut milk base isnt spicy at all obv

one thing nobody mentioned yet - theres a guy who does fried wontons (kiao tod) near the back entrance of the uni around 4pm, crispy little parcels with a sweet plum sauce. great for snacking while you walk around and figure out your next move

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
