honestly the billing desk there is used to nervous foreigners so just ask for a "price quotation" before anything. theyll print u a sheet with every test and doctor fee listed in baht. ive done it for a full physical and it came out exactly what they quoted, no surprises

one thing nobody mentions is the pharmacy on the ground floor will try to upsell you on vitamins and supplements. just say no thanks and get your prescriptions filled at a regular pharmacy outside, way cheaper. also theres a starbucks and a bank right inside the lobby if u need to grab cash or chill while waiting for results

youll be fine, just be direct about costs from the start. thai hospital staff are actually pretty straightforward if u ask the right questions

ngl the billing anxiety is real but theres a workaround most people miss. if you go to the international patient center on the 2nd floor before any appointments theyll assign you a case coordinator who handles all your billing and insurance paperwork. i did this last year and they sent me an itemized quote via LINE before i even saw the doctor. no surprises at checkout.

the real hidden cost is the parking. it's 50 baht per hour and adds up fast if you're there all day. take the BTS to Ploenchit instead and walk through the skywalk, drops you right at the hospital entrance. also the cafeteria on B1 has legit good khao man gai for 80 baht while the hospital restaurants upstairs charge 250 for the same thing.

The billing system is actually pretty straightforward if you use their cashier counters on each floor instead of the main lobby. The floor cashiers tend to be less busy and you can sit down and go through every line item with them. I always request a "pre-authorization" form from my doctor's nurse before any test, that gives you a hard price lock for 30 days. Also, their international claims department is on the 2nd floor near the main lobby, you can walk in and have them check your coverage against your policy on the spot. Skip the hospital pharmacy for anything you can get at Fascino on Sukhumvit 31, it's a 5 minute walk and a fraction of the price.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
