Overstaying My Welcome?

The Overstay has been on Charansanitwong soi 40ish since forever, run by a Thai guy who's basically a collector of strange things. Room 312 specifically, the flickering is real but it's the wiring. That whole building is old shophouse stock, the electrics are sketchy. What gets people is the noise at night, the soi dogs and the karaoke from somewhere nearby that you can never quite locate. If you're easily spooked, book a room on a higher floor away from the street, or honestly just stay in Banglamphu instead and visit the Overstay for a drink.

Lol, the Overstay Hotel in Bangkok? That place is totally atmospheric. Think less haunted house, more... eccentrically maintained vintage guesthouse with a really strong personality. The flickering lights? Probably just old wiring. The "creepy" vibe? It's definitely there, but it's more quirky than genuinely unsettling. I wouldn't worry unless you're genuinely terrified of slightly off-kilter decor and the faint smell of incense. Honestly, half the fun is the slightly unsettling mystery. If you like that Wes Anderson aesthetic, you'll probably love it, just don't expect a five-star experience. Manage your expectations and you'll have a good time.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
