7-Eleven Mysteries

Grabbed a mango sticky rice, which was, surprisingly, not as good as the one from that tiny street stall down the road. Anyway, I noticed this weird little shrine tucked away in the corner, behind the instant noodles. It looked kinda...homemade? Little flowers, a tiny Buddha statue, that kind of thing. Anyone know the story behind those little shrines they sometimes have inside 7-Elevens in Thailand? Is it a common thing, or was I just seeing things after too much sun? Seriously, it freaked me out a little...

honestly the shrine at that victory monument 7-eleven is one of the older ones i've seen in the city. a lot of the newer ones just have a small shelf with a picture but that one's got a proper little house setup. the red fanta thing is real, spirits apparently prefer it over water and its cheap enough for anyone to leave. if you go back around 7pm you'll prob see the security guard light an incense stick before his shift starts, they all do it

that little shrine is the phra phum, a spirit house for the land guardian. the one behind the noodles at victory monument is actually pretty famous among locals, some people stop by just to pay respects when theyre in the area. the offerings change daily, regulars leave fresh flowers and red fanta sometimes. if you want better mango sticky rice near there, walk to the soi next to the ratchathewi bts station, the lady with the cart sells it for 50 baht and its way fresher than the 7-eleven one

Yeah, those little shrines are just spirit houses. Super common in Thailand, you'll find them in all sorts of shops, not just 7-Elevens. It's just a way to keep the local spirits on your good side, nothing to freak out about.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
