i know a guy who fixes vintage motorbikes in a soi off sukhumvit 24, no sign just a blue metal gate that's always half open. he's got a bunch of old hondas and a couple bmw airheads from the 70s scattered around his workshop, and he'll let you poke around if you bring him a chang. the alley itself is lined with potted plants and has this weird quiet that feels miles from the asok traffic

try heading into the little soi that connects sukhumvit 18 to 20, it's just past the old petrol station and most people walk right by. there's a tiny coffee shop run by this guy who roasts his own beans in a converted garage, he'll chat with you about thai coffee culture if he's not busy and the iced espresso is only 40 baht. the alley itself is dead quiet during the day except for the occasional motorbike and the walls are covered in fading street art that's been there for years

You're right about Sirisuk, it's got its own vibe that's hard to describe. If you want a proper hidden alley experience, walk over to Soi Sukhumvit 16 and cut through the small lane that connects to Soi 14. There's a family-run som tam place about halfway down that's been there since the 90s, they use these tiny green papayas that are way crisper than what you get on the main road. The alley itself is barely wide enough for a motorbike and the old wooden shutters on the shophouses give it a real old Bangkok feel. Just watch for the stray cats that sleep right in the middle of the path, they own that soi more than anyone.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
