Totally lived up to its name, lots of quirky art everywhere, and the vibe was super chilled. But I found this weird little hidden compartment in my room...a small, locked box built into the wall. I didn't dare touch it, figuring it was probably something important. Anyone else stayed there and found something similar? What's the deal with that?

honestly that sounds like one of the old merchant safes from when the building was a trading post along the river. a lot of those charoen krung shophouses had them built into the walls for storing silk or spices or cash. the beat hotel's owners are big on preserving that stuff, they left the old concrete beams and wooden window frames exposed everywhere. if you go down to the lobby bar and ask for p'bank, the night manager, he'll probably tell you the whole story and might even show you a photo of the building from the 1950s they have framed behind the counter

those old wall safes pop up all over old town, not just at the beat hotel. i've seen them in a few guesthouses near klong san market too. yours was probably just forgotten when they did the renovation, the staff probably have a dozen of them scattered around. if you're back in the area, pop into the warehouse 30 cafe down the street, they left an old bank vault door as their main entrance, same era of building

oh that's def just an old safe from before it was a hotel, those old shophouses along charoen krung had them all over for cash storage. the staff probably know about it and just leave it as decor, they're pretty into the whole vintage industrial look. i'd pop by the front desk and ask, they love telling stories about the building's past

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
