But then...the bill arrived. It was, uh, significantly higher than I expected. I know, I know, @Bangkok can be expensive, but this felt off. Anyone else experience wildly different pricing at Chopsticks depending on the day or the server? Or am I just bad at math after too many Singha beers?

straight up check the receipt for a "cover charge" or "music fee" some places near the river add 50 baht per person just for sitting down and never mention it. also the servers might be swapping your order from the counter menu to the river menu when they ring it in, happened to me once and i caught it. next time just snap a photo of the menu on the wall before you order so you have proof

I've noticed they don't always bring you the same menu. The printed one they hand to river tables sometimes has slightly higher base prices than the one taped to the counter inside. Next time just walk up and order from the counter yourself, pay there, and carry your bowl to whatever table is free. Saves you the markup and the awkward moment when the bill arrives.

ngl the river view tax is real there, they definitely mark up stuff for the tables facing the water. i live in bangkok and always sit inside or grab takeout, the pad see ew is the same but the bill drops like 100 baht. also check if they added a service charge and vat separately, some spots in that area sneak it in without saying

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
