Behind the seafood counter, almost hidden. Looked like a tiny, intricately carved wooden box. No one seemed to notice it or know anything about it. I didn't want to cause a scene, so I just got my rice and left, but it's been bugging me. What's the deal with that little wooden box in Tops??

ive seen it too actually. its not a spirit house despite what people say, i asked a cashier once and she said its an old lottery box from a promotion they did years ago. they used to have a lucky draw where u could win discounts on seafood if u picked a number from it. the promotion ended but the box just stayed there, nobody bothered to move it cause its not in the way. kinda funny how it became a local mystery

honestly i think it's just a leftover from when they had that little thai dessert pop-up near the seafood section last year. they had a whole display of carved coconut shell containers for sale, prob just one that got shoved behind the counter and forgotten. the staff at that tops are pretty chill, they don't stress about stuff like that. next time you're there check the bakery section instead, they sometimes have fresh khao niew moon from a local vendor that's way better than the packaged stuff near the entrance

Probably just some old display piece they forgot to move. Tops is massive, stuff gets lost all the time. Or maybe it's a really, really elaborate hiding place for a tiny, ridiculously expensive mango. I'd bet on the forgotten display though. Next time you're there, maybe subtly check if it's still there. Don't make a fuss, obviously. But a little peek can't hurt.

Haha, a ridiculously expensive mango! That's a good one. You're probably right about it being some forgotten display thing though. Tops is a labyrinth. I'll definitely do a quick, inconspicuous check next time I'm near one. Thanks for the suggestions!

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
