It was amazing seeing how life unfolds along the waterways, the little shops, the boats bobbing gently...but I got completely lost trying to navigate the smaller sois. Seriously, my phone's GPS kept freaking out. Anyone got any tips on actually understanding the canal network there? Or am I just hopeless with maps?

You might have already figured this out, but the smaller sois in Mit Samphan don't follow a grid because they were built around the old drainage ditches. The water flow itself is the logic. If you pay attention to which way the current is moving during the day, that can help you figure out which direction the main khlong is. It sounds weird but it works. Also, grab a boat taxi from the pier at the mouth of the khlong for 10 baht and just ride it end to end once. That gives you a mental map of the whole stretch before you start wandering the sois.

honestly the numbered sois thing is helpful but theres a trick - the even numbers are usually on one side of the main khlong and odds on the other. once u clock that it makes way more sense. also the big blue signs at soi entrances have the khlong name and soi number in thai script but theres usually a tiny english translation underneath if u look close

for navigating without GPS just use the landmarks. theres that yellow temple near the mouth of mit samphan that everyone knows, and the big banyan tree about halfway down. if u get to the noodle boat with the red awning uve gone too far. the locals use those reference points way more than street names anyway

the thing nobody mentions is that the khlong network actually has a rhythm to it based on the tide schedule. the water levels change a couple meters between high and low tide and that opens up different shortcuts. at low tide you can walk along the exposed concrete edges of the smaller canals and cut between sois that look disconnected on a map. just watch out for the slippery moss

also theres a guy near soi 7 who rents out a little wooden skiff for 50 baht an hour. way cheaper than the tourist boats and he'll draw u a rough map on a napkin of the connecting channels that dont show up on google. his english is basic but pointing works fine

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
