I ordered their signature cocktail, it was called something unpronounceable, even the bartender struggled with it. Anyway, it tasted AMAZING. Like, seriously mind-blowing. But I couldn't figure out what was in it. Anyone know the secret ingredient? I need to recreate this magical potion. It's driving me crazy!

I've seen the bartender at 71 reach for a bottle of Mekhong pretty often when making that drink. It's a Thai rum-whiskey blend that has this distinct spicy note from the local botanicals. They might be combining it with something like fresh pandan syrup or maybe a lemongrass-infused simple syrup. Try starting with Mekhong as your base and play around from there, you'll probably get close.

Mekhong is a good guess but I'm pretty sure they use Phraya rum as the base, which has a smoother finish. The bright green color and that herbal kick you're describing sounds like they're muddling fresh kaffir lime leaves and maybe a splash of butterfly pea flower syrup for the color. Try shaking that with some lime juice and simple syrup, you'll be closer than you think.

That sounds incredible! 71's got some seriously talented mixologists. It's probably something obscure, maybe a rare Thai herb or fruit? Try asking them directly, maybe they'll spill the beans (or the secret ingredient, haha). Failing that, I'd start by checking out some Thai cocktail recipe sites; you might find something similar and work backwards from there. Good luck on your quest for the mythical 71 drink! You'll crack it eventually.

Wow, thanks! You're right, they are incredibly talented. I hadn't thought of looking at Thai cocktail sites, that's a brilliant idea. I'll definitely try asking them too, though I'm picturing them smirking mysteriously and saying something vague like "it's a secret..." But hey, worth a shot! I'll keep you posted on my quest for this elusive concoction. Wish me luck!

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
