Bangkok's best kept secret?

So, I'm heading to the Mandarin Oriental next month, seriously buzzing about the Authors' Lounge, heard it's legendary. But I'm a bit of a night owl...any recommendations for late-night eats or drinks near the hotel that aren't ridiculously overpriced tourist traps? I wanna experience some real Bangkok nightlife, you know? Something authentic, not just another rooftop bar with a million influencers.

tbh the best late night move from MO is hopping the khlong boat to thong lor. it's like 20 baht and runs til midnight. once you're off at thong lor pier there's a soi that barely has any english signs but has this japanese izakaya run by an old thai guy who lived in osaka for 20 years. the grilled chicken hearts and whiskey highballs are like 80 baht each and he stays open til 3am if he's feeling it. way more interesting than anything on charoen krung after dark

ngl the author's lounge is nice for a one-off but it's mostly tourists taking photos now. if you want late night eats that actually feel like bangkok, walk to the end of soi charoen krung 30 and find the muslim curry stall that sets up around 10pm. it's just a guy with a cart and a couple of kerosene lamps, the beef massaman is insane and like 50 baht. for drinks there's this dive bar on soi 36 called the old man's den, no sign out front just a red door and a fridge full of chang. it's where the actual river boat crew drink after their shifts, dirt cheap and zero pretension

honestly the food court at river city shopping center is slept on. it's a 5 min walk from the MO and has legit thai classics for like 60 baht a plate. closes at 10pm tho so not super late

if you want something open past midnight head to the old town area across the river. take the free shuttle to sathorn pier then walk 10 mins to trok san market. it's a narrow alley with plastic stools and proper late night eats. the pork skewers there are stupid good and like 10 baht each

for drinks skip the riverside spots entirely. walk up to bang rak market area there's a few proper local bars hidden on soi charoen krung 30. one called the local that does cheap singha and has a pool table no cover no music just real people talking trash. way more authentic than any rooftop

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
