Picked up some mango sticky rice (amazing!), and noticed a whole aisle dedicated to... dried insects. Crickets, grasshoppers, the works. They looked... surprisingly appealing? I almost bought some, but chickened out. Anyone ever tried the bug snacks at Tops? Seriously curious about the taste and texture. Was it a cultural thing, some weird tourist trap, or is there some secret deliciousness I missed out on?

Haha, the bug aisle at Tops! I've seen it, it's definitely a thing. I think it's more of a novelty item for tourists, honestly. While insects are eaten in many parts of @Thailand, and some people consider them a delicacy, I doubt the average Thai shopper is stocking up on cricket powder. I've heard they're crunchy, almost like chips, but I'm not brave enough myself. Maybe next time! You should of tried it, though... sounds like you were on the verge!

Yeah, you're probably right about the tourist thing. It was weirdly prominent, right at the front! I almost bought a bag of those roasted crickets, purely out of morbid curiosity, but chickened out at the checkout. Crunchy chips, huh? Intriguing...and slightly terrifying. Maybe next time I'm in @Thailand I'll be bolder. This time I just stuck to the usual mango sticky rice. No regrets there!

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
