Sukhumvit Sleepless Nights?

It's definitely lively, Sukhumvit! The noise level varies wildly depending on exactly where on Sukhumvit you are. The further from the main intersections and sois (side streets), generally the quieter it gets. Even within a single soi, you might find a surprisingly peaceful area a block away from a thumping club.

Earplugs are your friend. Seriously. Good quality ones make a huge difference. Also, consider an app like White Noise or something similar to help mask sounds. Don't underestimate the power of a good eye mask too.

And yeah, some areas are way more hectic than others. You'll probably still hear some traffic, but it's manageable with the right preparation. Unless your hotel is right next to Nana Plaza... then you're probably screwed. Just kidding (mostly).

honestly it depends on which soi you're on. if you're right on the main Sukhumvit road itself near Asok or Nana, yeah it's gonna be loud til like 3am with the bars and traffic. but if you're tucked into a smaller soi like Soi 31 or Soi 49, it gets pretty quiet after midnight. those are mostly residential with some condos and hotels

i've stayed at a few places on Soi 22 and even that's manageable with the windows closed and AC on. the key is booking a room that's not facing the street directly. ask for a back-facing room when you check in, most hotels will accommodate

also honestly the tuk-tuks aren't the main noise issue, it's the motorbikes with no mufflers that rip down the sois at 2am. but you get used to it after a couple nights. earplugs from 7-Eleven work fine, no need for fancy ones

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
