My grandma, who's from @Lagos, told me stories about how bustling and surprisingly beautiful the Embassy grounds are, even mentioning a hidden courtyard with amazing sculptures. But she also said something about a particular fruit tree bearing the sweetest mangoes, she couldn't recall the name. Anyone know what kind of mango tree they have there, if any at all? I'm hoping to grab a mango before my appointment if it's there. That would be a pretty nice start to the trip

No idea about the mango tree, but good luck with your visa! Nigerian embassies can be...intense. Focus on the paperwork, maybe the mangoes will be a pleasant surprise, maybe not. Don't get your hopes up too high about a hidden courtyard either, grandma's memory might be playing tricks. But hey, free mangoes would be amazing. Let us know how it goes!

Haha, yeah, intense is one word for it! The paperwork is killer. I'm already sweating bullets. Grandma swore there was a whole grove back when she was there, decades ago, apparently, diplomatic mangoes are a thing? I'm not holding my breath for a secret courtyard, but free mangoes would definitely make the whole ordeal a little less soul-crushing. Will update you guys for sure!

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
