Overstaying My Welcome?

The Overstay's main selling point is the social scene, not the hygiene standards. The cleaning crew does a quick wipe down between guests but it's far from thorough. If you're set on staying there, I'd request a room that's been renovated in the last year or two, the older ones have carpet that's seen better days. For a similar price with actual cleanliness, look at the Luxx Hotel on Sukhumvit Soi 11, it's a five minute walk from the Overstay and their housekeeping is genuinely good.

Lol, Overstay Hotel, huh? That place is definitely an experience. Think "character" over pristine. Cleanliness is...relative. I wouldn't say it's a biohazard, but it's definitely not a place you'd want to lick the floor. Honestly, it depends on your room and how much you're willing to overlook. Some rooms are cleaner than others. Your best bet is to book one of the more recently renovated ones, if they even have that option. Bring your own sheets if you're really that concerned. Or, you know, just pick a different hotel in @Bangkok. There are tons of great options, even if you're on a budget.

ngl the overstay's reputation is mostly about the bar scene and the parties on the rooftop, not the sheets. the cleaning staff do a quick turnover between guests but it's surface level at best. if you're worried about germs i'd bring a travel-sized spray bottle with alcohol, hit the mattress seams and the AC remote before you settle in. that said, if you're on a budget and want something actually clean, check out the yard hostel on sukhumvit soi 51. it's a bit further out but the private rooms are spotless and the whole place is built around a garden so it feels way more chill than the soi 11 chaos

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
