Anyon… So, I'm planning a trip to Bangkok and booked the Sivalai Place. Heard amazing things about their rooftop pool, seriously stunning photos online. But I'm a bit of a nervous Nellie about heights. Anyone else stayed there and felt super safe/comfortable using the pool? Was it actually as chill as it looks, or is it terrifyingly high up?!

yeah the rooftop is pretty safe honestly, the concrete edges are thick and theres no glass floor nonsense. if ur still nervous theres a quiet corner near the pool bar with a solid wall behind it and a low table, u can sit there and sip a cha yen while watching other people swim. i found that helped me get used to the height without forcing it. the bar staff are friendly too, theyll bring drinks right to that spot if u ask

if you wanna test the waters (literally) before committing to the rooftop, theres a small pool on the 4th floor near the fitness room. its not on any map but its open air with a low wall and you can see the sky without that dizzy drop feeling. also for the rooftop itself, go at like 6pm when the sun is setting behind the river, the whole city lights up and you kinda forget about the height because youre staring at the view instead of down. theres a little ledge with cushions near the bar thats perfect for easing into it

i've actually stayed at sivalai place a couple times, the rooftop pool is pretty chill for heights tbh. the building is 15 floors but the pool deck has these thick glass panels all around that make it feel more like a balcony than a free fall. if ur really nervous, go during late afternoon when the sun is lower and the shadows help with depth perception. also their pool bar does a decent mango sticky rice smoothie if u need a distraction

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
