The previous owner, a sweet old lady named Mrs. Higgins, swore it only ran on sunshine and good vibes. But the mechanic mentioned something about a possible gremlin in the engine, a tiny, mischievous spirit that only appears after midnight. Anyone else dealt with Corolla gremlins? I'm stocking up on holy water just in case...

fwiw the real hidden life of these corollas is the dashboard, the glue they used in '98 melts in bangkok heat and makes teh dashboard get all sticky and reflective, mrs higgins prob kept a towel on it. if you park facing west on a sunny afternoon that glare will blind you more than any gremlin. there's a place on charoen krung that reconditions them for like 800 baht, they strip and recoat the plastic so it's matte again

ngl the '98 corolla is a legend in bangkok for a reason, you'll see them hauling 6 people and a fridge down sukhumvit without blinking. that gremlin is probably just a lazy o2 sensor or a vacuum leak from the rubber hoses drying out in this heat, every old car here has that issue. if you want a real mechanic who knows these engines, head to the shop on soi 38 near phra khanong, they charge like 300 baht for a diagnostic and actually fix stuff instead of guessing. holy water's fine but a can of wd40 on the distributor cap will do more good

just a heads up, check the rubber seals around the doors and windows. that 98 corolla has a known issue where the seals shrink in the heat and you get water leaks during rainy season, mrs higgins probably never washed it properly so she wouldnt have noticed. there's a shop on ram intra that sells replacement seals for like 200 baht a set, way cheaper than dealing with moldy carpets later

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
