the staff thing is just the service culture here, it's not personal. if you want a break from that vibe next time, walk over to w district on ekkamai soi 8, it's like 15 mins on foot. there's a vinyl bar called the wall that plays jazz and the owner barely talks to you unless you start it, proper chill. also the sivalai rooftop is nice but the real move is grabbing a beer from 7-11 and sitting on the bench at the end of soi sivalai where it meets the canal, watch the longtail boats go by for free

honestly the best thing about sivalai place isnt even the hotel itself, its how close it is to talad rot fai night market. like a 10 min walk. way better than the tourist traps. the "too friendly" staff thing is just thai hospitality, they mean well but it can feel intense if ur not used to it

If you want to balance that out, try walking over to the Ekkamai Soi 10 area for a meal at Suppaniga, it's about a 15 minute walk and way more low key. The food is northern Thai style and the service is warm but not hovering. Also, the hotel's location is decent for catching the BTS from Ekkamai station, but for a proper local breakfast skip the hotel buffet and grab a boat noodle bowl at the shop under the Phra Khanong BTS.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
