Bangkok Beat Hotel Blues?

honestly the beat hotel is a gamble every time. ive stayed twice, first time the internet was fine, second time i was hotspotting off my phone. depends on which room you get i think. if you need reliable connection next time try the lobby at the warehouse 30 coworking space, its a 10 minute walk and the coffee is decent for 60 baht. also the plumbing thing is real, you gotta let the water run for a solid 3 minutes before it gets warm

ngl the beat hotel wifi is basically a dice roll depending on which floor ur on. the third floor rooms get better signal cause the router's closer but the fourth floor is a dead zone. if u gotta work grab a seat at the rooftop before 6pm when it gets packed, their separate line is actually decent. also next time just bring a local sim with a data package, true move has unlimited for like 300 baht a month and it's faster than their wifi anyway

yeah the beat hotel wifi is kind of a known thing, it's not great. if you need to get stuff done online, there's a coworking spot called hua lamphong station just a 15 minute walk away, they have fiber and it's like 100 baht for a day pass. but honestly the beat's charm is being unplugged, i'd just lean into it and go wander talad noi instead, it's way more wong kar-wai than instagram anyway

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
