Abuja Embassy's Secret?

I've walked past the Nigerian Embassy on Krung Kasem Road a few times, and honestly the garden is more overgrown than anything special. That said, there's a small soi off Si Phraya near there where an old woman sells the best nam dok mai mangoes I've had in Bangkok, no myth required. If you're dead set on the embassy tree, you'll find it behind the main building near the fence, but I'd grab a bag of those soi mangoes for 20 baht instead.

the nam dok mai from that soi off si phraya is legit, prob the best you'll find for 20 baht. the embassy tree thing is more of a staff inside joke from what i heard, one of the guards told me it was planted by some guy who just missed home cooking. if you're set on checking it out, the fruit is just okay, nothing special taste wise. honestly the whole area around krung kasem is worth a wander anyway, there's a good khao man gai spot two blocks south that's open till 3pm

I used to work in an office building nearby and one of the security guys told me the story once. Apparently the tree is real but the fruit tastes completely normal, just regular mangoes that happen to be from a tree with some history. The diplomat who planted it was from the north of Nigeria and it's more of a sentimental thing for the staff than anything magical.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
