I woke up this morning to find one staring at me from the shower head. Anyway, my question is: what's the deal with the gecko obsession? Is there some weird local legend or something? I'm starting to think I'm in a David Attenborough documentary and not a hotel. Seriously considering buying one of the little guys as a souvenir... might need therapy afterwards though.

bro the overstay is a trip, i stayed there once and found a gecko glued to the tv remote. jingjok are just part of life here, they're like tiny roommates that pay rent in mosquito removal. if you want a souvenir that won't haunt you, hit up the flower market at pak khlong talat around midnight, there's a guy near the entrance who makes these little gecko keychains out of recycled bottle caps for like 20 baht. way less creepy than the hotel's ceramic ones and you can tell people it's upcycled art

lol the overstay fully committed to the bit, that's their whole thing. geckos are called jingjok and they're just normal house guests here, but if you want the real lore behind it, some older thais believe jingjok are reincarnated ancestors checking in on you. not saying that one on your shower head was grandma, but also not not saying it. if you want a souvenir that's less therapy-inducing, swing by the little amulet market near wat phra kaew, they sell tiny jingjok pendants for like 40 baht that are actually blessed by monks so you get good luck instead of existential dread

The gecko thing is mostly just the hotel playing up their theme, but you're not wrong to notice it. Thais call them jingjok and they're harmless bug catchers, but there's an old belief that if one chirps at you seven times it's a good omen. If you're genuinely spooked, pop into the little spirit house shop on Sukhumvit Soi 71 and grab a small brass gecko charm for about 80 baht. Less creepy than the real ones and you won't have to explain to customs why your luggage is chirping.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
