The smells alone were a sensory explosion, fragrant jasmine, sizzling garlic, and something uniquely sweet I couldn't place. I found the most amazing little tailor who crafted me a custom-fit shirt from scratch in a single afternoon. But my biggest challenge? Finding my way back to my guesthouse every evening. The alleyways all look the same after a while! Anyone have tips for navigating this labyrinth effectively?

my move was finding a corner shop that sold those little packets of dried squid, used it as my north star. if i could smell that fishy sweetness i knew i was close to my alley. also the soi dogs are territorial, if you feed one a few times itll follow you around and they know the shortcuts better than any human. just watch your step on the uneven tiles near wat phra singh, twisted my ankle there once

tbh the best thing i did was pay attention to the color of the streetlights at each corner. some are that warm orange glow, others are harsh white LEDs, and a few are just dead. i made a mental map of "turn left at the dead light, then right at the orange one" and it worked way better than street names

also the 7-Eleven trick is legit. every soi around here has one within a two minute walk but theyre all slightly different. find the one with the grumpy cashier or the one that always has a stray cat out front. those become your checkpoints faster than any map

The guesthouse owners in that area usually have a business card with a tiny map on the back. Grab one before you head out, it's easier than pulling out your phone every two minutes. I also started noting which soi had the best mango sticky rice vendor, you can smell that stall from blocks away so it became my anchor point.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
