Bangkok's Best Kept Secret?

I've heard amazing things, but also some...whispers. Anyone know the real deal on their patient advocacy program? Seriously considering upgrading my package, but want to know if it's actually worth the extra baht. My uncle swears they saved his life, but a friend had a frustrating experience with billing. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle, but any insider info would be gold.

honestly the thing nobody mentions is that the advocacy upgrade gets u access to the 7th floor international lounge while you're waiting around. free decent coffee and actual quiet chairs instead of those plastic ones near the pharmacy. if you're there for hours between tests it makes a real difference. but the real hack is asking your advocate to set up the hospital's own transport service for your follow up appointments, they can arrange a car that picks u up from your hotel or condo and drops u right at the basement entrance so u skip the soi 3 traffic mess entirely.

You are not going to find this in the glossy brochures, but the advocacy program's best feature is the discharge coordination. Bumrungrad's pharmacy on the ground floor gets a long queue around 10am, and your advocate can have your take-home meds packed and waiting at a side counter before you even leave the room. For a serious procedure where you will be groggy or on painkillers, that alone is worth the upgrade because the last thing you want is to stand in line with a fresh incision. Just be clear with them upfront that you want them handling the discharge logistics, not just the admission paperwork.

Having a procedure at Bumrungrad is stressful enough without worrying about the admin side. If you're there for something serious, the advocacy upgrade is less about the fancy extras and more about having a single person who knows the hospital's shortcuts, like which elevator banks get you to the 15th floor faster or how to get a same-day lab result without waiting in the main queue. The real test is if you need an urgent consult after hours, the advocates can sometimes reach the on-call specialist directly rather than going through the switchboard. Just keep your own copies of every document, because the hospital's own system has been known to lose a referral letter or two.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
