Ayutthaya's Hidden Canals?

yeah those little khlongs are a different world. if you want to explore them by water, skip the tourist boats and head to khlong moeng at the end of soi 17 off si ayutthaya road, there's a family there that rents out paddleboats for like 80 baht an hour, no engine, just you and the lotus pads. they don't advertise, you just walk down to the water and someone's kid will wave you over. it's worth timing it for late afternoon when the light goes golden and the herons start hunting

you could try khlong thammarak near wat phutthai sawan in the late afternoon, there's this old guy with a wooden boat who does sunset trips just for the vibe, not really a tour, he just paddles around and points out monitor lizards and lotus flowers, 150 baht if he likes you

those little khlongs are best seen by foot tbh, the bike rental idea is solid but if you want to actually be on the water without hassle, khlong thuam up near wat na phra men has a couple of guys who rent out these flat-bottomed bamboo rafts, not boats exactly, more like floating platforms with a pole to push yourself along. 50 baht for 30 minutes, you drift past sleeping cats and old wooden stilt houses where aunties will wave and sometimes offer you slices of mango if you look harmless. the entrance is hidden behind a noodle shop that only has a sign in thai, just follow the smell of fish sauce and look for a red cooler full of ice tea out front

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
