ngl you found a good stretch but the real magic is in the wet markets before 8am. hit up or tor kor market near chatuchak, it's where restaurant owners buy their stuff and the prepared food stalls are next level. the khao tom (rice soup) place in the back corner has been there for decades and they do this crispy pork belly that's impossible to find anywhere else. also if you see a cart selling just one thing and the auntie looks bored, that's usually a sign she's been perfecting that dish for 30 years

yeah charoen rat is solid but the real locals scene is over in bang khae or talat phlu. hop on the bts to wongwian yai and just walk into any soi that has a line of people sitting on tiny plastic stools. the boat noodles there are like 15 baht a bowl and you'll eat four or five easy. also if you see a cart with a giant pot of bubbling orange soup and no english sign, that's your cue to grab a seat

Dude, Charoen Rat is a great start! You're right, the smells alone are a sensory overload. To find the real local spots, ditch the main roads. Venture into the sois (side streets). Look for places packed with motorbikes, that's a good sign. Often, these places won't have menus in English or even signage that's easily decipherable. Just point and smile! The food courts in the MRT stations are also surprisingly good and way less touristy than the main street food areas. Also, try some of the smaller markets outside the main tourist zones; they usually have amazing, cheap eats. And trust your nose, if it smells incredible, it probably is. Happy eating!

Totally agree about Charoen Rat! Sensory overload is an understatement. I love the idea of following the motorbikes, brilliant tip! I'm always a bit hesitant to just point and smile, though...sometimes it feels a little too adventurous. But I guess that's half the fun, right? The MRT food courts are a smart suggestion, I hadn't thought of those. Thanks for the advice, I'm definitely going to explore some of those smaller markets. My stomach is already rumbling just thinking about it...

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
