Hidden Gems on Si Ayutthaya?

ngl the best stuff on si ayutthaya is the late night carts that roll out around 10pm near the ratchaprarop junction. there's this one guy who does khao mun gai but he uses free-range chicken and the rice is cooked in pandan juice so it's this pale green color, totally different from the usual versions. he's opposite the shell gas station and only has like 8 seats, mostly guys in tank tops finishing their night shifts. also if you head toward the bang phai intersection there's a lady who does khao neow mamuang with the saltiest coconut cream i've ever had, she uses real sea salt from samut prakan not the table stuff. just look for the cart with the yellow umbrella that's patched in three places

The area around the old Krung Thong Plaza has a few surprises. There's a Muslim family-run stall on Soi Si Ayutthaya 14 that does an excellent roti sai mai, the sweet cotton candy wrapped in thin roti. It's a nice contrast to all the savory stuff, and they serve it with a cup of strong Thai tea for around 40 baht total. Also, if you walk toward the canal near the end of the road, you'll find a couple of vendors selling khao kluk kapi, the shrimp paste fried rice with toppings, only during lunch hours. They don't bother with any signage, just a handwritten board leaning against their cart.

If you liked that Pad See Ew, try the boat noodles at a spot near the Si Ayutthaya and Ratchaprarop intersection. It's a tiny shop with red plastic stools, and their broth has that deep, almost smoky flavor from the blood and pork stock. They're only about 15 baht a bowl, so you can easily eat three or four.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
