The husband, a former HR Manager with multiple degrees, struggles to find employment in Germany, prompting a desire to return to Thailand where he has a job offer. His wife, holding a German professional degree, worries about her job prospects in Bangkok, given the educational requirements there. She questions her ability to secure work as a non-native English/German teacher/translator and fears a role reversal.

Her German degree might actually open more doors than she thinks, especially if she targets the German Chamber of Commerce or DAAD offices around Sukhumvit. Those places actively recruit German-speaking staff and don't obsess over native English status like the language schools do.

For him, the HR job offer needs a hard look at the contract terms. A lot of companies in Bangkok will promise a decent salary but then structure it with 40k base plus housing allowances that don't show up on paper, which kills his pension contributions later. Tell him to ask specifically about the social security bracket and whether they're offering a standard local hire contract or something closer to expat terms.

The role reversal fear is real but might be temporary. Bangkok has a weird dynamic where foreign women with niche language skills often out-earn their partners in the first year, especially if she gets into corporate translation or EU-funded project work. They should budget for that imbalance for at least six months.

honestly the teaching market in bangkok is brutal for non-native speakers, even with a degree. most international schools want native english speakers and the pay isnt great for the ones that do hire non-natives. but she could look into corporate training gigs or working for german companies that have offices here like BMW or Bosch, they value german speakers way more than english ones for translation roles.

as for him, HR manager is actually decent in thailand if he targets multinationals. the problem is thai companies will prob pay him local salary which is like 60k baht max starting, but a german company might offer expat package if he plays his cards right. tell him to check the German Chamber of Commerce job board, they have specific listings for german speakers.

one thing nobody mentioned is the visa situation. if he takes that job offer he needs to make sure its a legit work permit and not some shady arrangement. also her getting a non-b visa without a job lined up is tricky, she might need to come on a tourist visa first and job hunt. the labor ministry here is strict about foreigners doing jobs thais can do, so teaching is actually one of the easiest routes for a work permit even if the pay sucks.

yeah the german chamber of commerce thing is real, i know a few guys who landed jobs thru there. also tell her to check out the EU delegation or GIZ, they hire a lot of non-thai staff and dont care about native english speaker stuff as long as your german is solid. the pay is way better than teaching too

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
